Critics are raving about A DANGEROUS FICTION:
“Required Reading: A glamorous New York literary agent has a lot to fear — and not just from really bad novels. In Rogan’s thriller, uber-agent Jo Donovan finds members of her uptown inner circle brutally murdered shortly after she rejects a manuscript. But things may get worse: She is certain the detective sent by the NYPD is not New York’s finest. In fact, he’s her ex-boyfriend. You might want to lock your door.” —New York Post
“Rogan does a masterful job of juggling the mounting suspense with a full-bodied portrait of New York literary life and Jo’s complex backstory as the widow of a major novelist in the Norman Mailer/Philip Roth mold. The fresh setting, the tricky plot, and the strong characterizations make “A Dangerous Fiction” one of the outstanding mysteries of 2013.” —- CT News

“You won’t get much argument from anyone (including writers) that writers are crazy — but the writer stalking New York literary agent Jo Donovan seems especially bent on harm….Rogan gives readers a lot of insider publishing tidbits and provides a very likeable and believable protagonist in Jo.” —Cleveland Plain Dealer
“Boasting an exciting pace, well-constructed scenes, and inside information about the publishing word, this engaging mystery will attract readers of P. D. James’ similar Original Sin (1995).”—Booklist

“Jo, a charming but flawed heroine, is an engaging character, honest, direct, courageous, a country girl from Kentucky who came to New York to be in the big time…A Dangerous Fiction is a well-contrived fiction with side benefits for aspiring writers. An example of how the elements of fiction fit together to create a suspenseful and engaging tale, it also portrays the precarious world of writing and publishing.” Joan Baum, Dan’s Papers

(Note from Barbara: Among the writers who were kind enough to read and praise A Dangerous Fiction were several posthumous contributors. For some odd reason, my editor doesn't think I should post them here among what she calls the "real" blurbs. But they are posted on my blog, In Cold Ink, and I can't resist calling your attention to those very generous remarks by Ernest Hemingway and Jane Austen, among others.)
A Dangerous Fiction is a romp of a publishing mystery that introduces Jo Donovan, literary agent-cum-detective.
Jo Donovan always manages to come out on top. From the backwoods of Appalachia, she forged a hard path to life among the literati in New York City. At thirty-five, she's the widow of the renowned author Hugo Donovan and the owner of one of the best literary agencies in town. Jo is living the life she dreamed of…but it's all about to fall apart.
When a would-be client turns stalker, Jo is more angry than shaken until her clients come under attack. Meanwhile, a biography of Hugo Donovan is in the works and the author's digging threatens to destroy the foundations of Jo's carefully constructed life. As the web of suspicion grows wider and her stalker ups the ante, she's persuaded by her client and friend-FBI profiler-turned-bestselling-thriller writer-to go to the police. There Jo finds herself face-to-face with an old flame: the handsome Tommy Cullen, now NYPD detective; and suddenly life gets even more complicated.
A Dangerous Fiction is about both deception and self-deception, the dangerous fictions we read and the dangerous fictions we tell ourselves.
